David talks about the importance of learning the basics and not jumping ahead to simply find the “Best of” routines.
Only when you realize how the “best” use of a theory came about, can you fully put it into use.

Sounds like a very good concept. I like it. But you rattled off names of magicians like we know who they are. Maybe I missed something here. Am I just not in the loop or are those people just obscure professionals that I never heard of before?

Dave,
Way to go. Love the show. You made great points. I hope that the kids that get into the art will take your advice.

Love the idea of the site. A welcome oasis in the Internet desert. David, I disagree that people on magic forums ask, “What’s the best ******* in Apocalypse?”. They ask, “What’s Apocalypse?”

I have no idea what you were talking about, but I love the way you said it! I’m no magician, but I know a good one when I see it and David Corsaro, you are awesome! Keep up the awesomeness!

No offence, but you’ve drawn a false conclusion. When two people perform the same effect, the only difference is the people - or more specifically, the presentation.
This of course assumes you performed the effect without any technical errors.
If that was the case, it was your presentation that let you down, not the trick. The trick obviously works - as shown by your colleague.

Thanks for your feedback. However, you are assuming that the “trick” and the “presentation” are mutually exclusive, and the truth is that they are not always .
Imagine if Mac King performed Lance Burton’s Dove Act. And I mean performed it exactly as Lance does it. Do you think it would come through to the audience the same way it does when Lance performs it ? Mac’s personality is that of a comedy magician and therefore it needs to find material that suites his personality.
If you read “Strong Magic” by Darwin Ortiz or “Shattering Illusions” by Jamy Ian Swiss, you will see the common theme of finding the right material and presentations for your own personality. And that is all I am suggesting…..comb through all material and find what it is best for you….and YOU are the only person that can do that.
Thanks again and I appreciate any and all comments and feedback

Of course Mac King is not going to perform a dove act anytime soon (that’s material selection). But Jason Byrne does, so does Greg Frewin - and they all bring different presentations to standard dove moves (if they can be called “moves”).
Method, effect and presentation are almost always mutually exclusive. Just because you perform Daley’s last trick, doesn’t mean you have to have the same presentation. Similarly, you can use the standard Daley’s last trick presentation on many other effects. It would be a sad world if nobody deviated from the original presentations.
Above you said “and that is all I am suggesting…..comb through all material and find what it is best for you”.
But that is not what you said on the video. You suggested finding different methods for the same effect (”what is the best xxxx trick”). This assumes then, that YOU chose the material (or effect) that was right for you, and by comparison to another performer, you didn’t do so well, leaving only the presentation up for discussion.
I find it hard to believe that two competent magicians using the same method and different (but still good) presentations can end with one success and one fail.
Do you truly believe that your method of xxxx trick is what let you down?

You bet it would be a sad world if nobody deviated from the original presentation. However, I don’t believe that if I did your version of Triumph, with your presentation of Triumph, that I would get the same spectator reactions that you get.
Books on magic theory talk all the time about adjusting presentations to fit your style. They suggest this because if you do a presentation exactly like someone else, the audience will pick up on the fact that you are not being “you.”
In Strong Magic, Darwin Ortiz says, “Whatever types of effects play best for you is probably because audiences sense something in your personality that resonates to these effects.”
To me, that suggests that some effects play better for one person than for another (assuming presentations are a constant.)
My hope in this video is to get people to expand their knowledge base and strive to find the best effects for them…..and the only person to do that is yourself.
I love magic theory discussions like this and I encourage everyone to post their opinions.

When did you get so smart?
Kidding David,
I knew the first time I saw you that you knew this. I would not have worked with you had I not. Another thing, the only magicians I ever knew who learned this did it in the real world performing professionally for people not magicians.
